Why they broke up.
Star Magazine has put out an article about why they think Hilary Duff and Joel Madden broke up. They claim it’s the real reason, and they know the truth, but they tend to be rather gossipy. Nonetheless, here is the article on Hilary and Joel:
Sources close to both Hilary and Joel tell Star that reports claiming the pair’s age difference caused them to split is incorrect. In fact, it was Hilary who was the more mature one in the relationship. "They fought all the time about how immature he is and they really started drifting apart in recent months," a Duff source tells Star, adding it was she who ended the relationship. "He’s like a five-year-old, and she’s like a 45-year-old woman trapped in a teenager’s body. Hilary would say things to Joel like, ‘Why haven’t you grown up? We’ve been together for like two years and you just haven’t grown up. I have. I can’t believe how much I’ve changed, and you haven’t.’ It kept happening over and over, and she kept making those comments in recent months."
The Duff source adds that their respective lifestyles were at odds with each other: She’s a mature, Type A film actress — diametrically different than her partying nemesis and counterpart Lindsay Lohan — and he’s a laid-back rocker dude. "She’s filming movies with big movie stars, and she’s very career-oriented," the source says. "Not that Joel isn’t career-oriented, he’s just happy doing what he’s doing, being in Good Charlotte, and deejaying, while Hilary goes from movie to movie, magazine cover to magazine cover and from album to album. They just weren’t on the same page. They both were aware of the issues, so it was a pretty amicable split. They just grew apart."
The Duff source adds, "Their fights about him being immature were always about stupid things, that people in a relationship with that dynamic would fight about," the source says. "It would be stuff like about his punctuality, that he was late a lot when they met, and that he was irresponsible. There wasn’t one big bomb, like cheating. Toward the end, there was constant fighting, really over nothing. He wasn’t going out and partying and getting drunk all the time, or anything like that. In fact, he was very protective of her."
A Madden sources echoes that Hilary was the more mature partner in the relationship. "He’s the nicest kid, but she seemed like the older one, because she’s so much more mature," the source tells Star. "The split was kind of a surprise, because he is a good guy and they were very close. He’s not the type of guy who goes out to clubs and like hangs from chandeliers. He’s not a big drinker. He’s not that wild."
Hilary and Joel are nursing their wounds thousands of miles apart from each other: Hilary is currently shooting the 2007 action film Brand Hauser: Stuff Happens in Bulgaria, opposite Joan Cusack, John Cusack and Ben Kingsley. Joel, meanwhile spent the week following Thanksgiving in New York with his band filming a video for their upcoming album, slated for release in March, as well as making cameos at various events. The Madden source says Joel is nursing his wounds, adding, "I can tell he’s not himself. He’s definitely bummed about it."
It’s over for the tattooed rocker and his teen queen: Good Charlotte’s Joel Madden and Hilary Duff have broken up after nearly two and a half years together, his manager confirms to PEOPLE.
"I can indeed confirm that Joel is single," the band’s manager, Steve Feinberg, says. "We are not going to elaborate on Joel’s personal life but I will say they have split."
Madden made a DJ appearance at Chicago hot spot Enclave on Wednesday night, and according to a source, told clubgoers he and Duff had split up. He "seemed pretty upset," the witness said.
Madden, 27, and Duff, 19, only went public as a couple last year, with Madden co-producing and co-writing three tracks on her greatest-hits album, Most Wanted.
"I’ve found the perfect person," Madden told PEOPLE in October of Duff. "She’s confident, she accepts me for my imperfections and she is good to me. I never have to question if she’s going to be there, because I know she will be."
