Hilary Duff wouldn?t call her latest album her "breakup" album.
As in, it?s not mainly about the end of her relationship with Good Charlotte frontman Joel Madden, who has since hooked up with Nicole Richie.
In fact, that characterization drives the singer ? who was in Toronto yesterday promoting Dignity, which is noticeably darker in lyrics and more dance-oriented in sound ? a bit nuts.
"I hate hearing that, it?s so annoying," said Duff.
"For the first time, I (co-wrote) my record and I?m really proud of this. And, yeah, I was in a relationship for two and a half years and I?m 19, and that was a huge part of my life, so there?s definitely songs on the record about Joel.
"It?s a big mixture of things and it was just what I was feeling at the time. But nobody wants to talk about the good songs that I wrote, like Never Stop. It?s my favourite song on the record and it?s all about being in a relationship and being so happy.
"Of course, everyone wants to focus on the songs that are supposedly about his girlfriend. So it?s hurtful. I don?t have anything against Nicole Richie. I don?t know her. And I care about Joel and I want them to be happy."
Still, the title track on Dignity does frown upon the so-called "young Hollywood crowd," of which Richie is a part, with a chorus of, "Where?s your dignity? / I think you lost it in the Hollywood Hills."
"I don?t think it?s a positive thing," said Duff of behaviour ranging from panty-less outings to trips to rehabs. "People have to learn for themselves, I guess. But being in this business (brings) a responsibility to certain people, and not just young girls. Older girls look up to younger girls who are famous.
Duff, who on the track Dreamer addresses having a stalker "in a tongue-in-cheek way," said she much prefers her close relationships with family and friends.
"I don?t want that kind of (negative) attention. I guess I think it?s just kind of not real and that?s why I wrote (Dignity). I stay out of it because I don?t like it. People that party all the time, I don?t want to be around that. It?s a total game that a lot of them play. I know stories of people who call paparazzi on themselves. Who would want to do that? I don?t know, it?s just strange."
As for the bizarre head-shaving-to-rehab road that fellow pop star Britney Spears has recently travelled, Duff has a lot of empathy for her.
"I like Britney Spears. I?ve always liked her music and I think she?s really talented and I feel horrible for her. Where she lives in L.A., there?s like 40 paparazzi cars all day long, all night long. And when she leaves her house, every single one of those cars follow her.
"I would go crazy. I mean I don?t think she?s crazy, but if you could never leave your house without having that, I don?t know, I just feel for her."

Having a Blast! [ 4/20/2007 ]

OMG, I am in West Palm Beach and having a blast! I am visiting our friend John Goodman who has a bunch of charity events surrounding a huge polo tournament. I went to the Polo Club reception tonight. I never imagined that they would have elephants. One elephant liked me and almost scooped me up for a ride. I got to pet a boa constrictor. His name was Powder, but I wasn?t letting him around my neck. Then I ate a great dinner and took pics with some HOT Polo Players. Tomorrow is the Polo game, and what the heck; I am going to ride a horse!Oh yeah, I can?t believe I 4got 2 tell u the best part of getting there. Ok, there aren?t any direct flights from LAX to West Palm Beach, so the plane goes into Miami, which is an hour and a half car ride. When we arrived, they had a helicopter waiting. I was terrified especially when he said that we would be there in 20 minutes! After I got in the air, I realized how cool and exciting it was to see America. We saw the Everglades, alligators swimming, beautiful views and it was awesome! I am having the time of my life, it doesn?t seem like work. I?ll show u some pics.

Palm Beach, Hollywood & Toronto! [ 4/23/2007 ]

Hey guys, been flying all day. Just got to Toronto. It started raining as soon as we landed. I HOPE THAT THE WEATHER GETS BETTER! Oh yeah, last night I did the Young Hollywood Awards. The guy that does the Mac commercials was the host. He was funny. Ludacris asked me to present an award to him. I was honored and it was a good crowd. Tomorrow, I have a packed day!Oh yeah, West Palm Beach was COOL! I played a little Polo. At first I was nervous because it is the number 2 most violent sport besides NASCAR. But once I got on the horse, everything was cool and all of the polo players said that I have good eye-hand coordination. I had fun on the horse and then we took a helicopter back to Miami Airport because there aren?t any direct flights from West Palm Beach, it?s a 2 hour car ride or 20 minute copter ride. I want to go back and relax with my friends. John Goodman, who runs the Polo Club was so nice and made us feel at home.
Again, thanx for voting for With Love on TRL. Hopefully, it will stay in the top 10 long enough to retire. I?ll have a podcast coming soon and I will tell you first before anyone else what my next video will be!

According to reports from the incident, police officers rushed to the scene, pummeling the fellow who allegedly threatened to kill the pop star during her appearance on the Canadian TV show.
According to the Post Chronicle, ?Duff was being interviewed by MuchMusic host Leah Miller on Live @ Much when a guy in the crowd outside the studio started yelling at the 19-year-old. According to an eyewitness, the unidentified man promised to kill her, prompting several police officers to tackle him.?
?The cops slammed his face into the pavement. He was bleeding.? another witness added.
Not scared off by the whole ordeal, Duff would later greet her many fans who pushed forward for autographs and pictures, doing so just feet from where the arrest took place.
Duff probably handled the situation so well because she has had this experience before. Last November, police in Manhattan Beach, California, arrested 18-year-old Maksim Miskovsky for stalking and threatening to kill Duff.
Thank goodness none of these crazies have actually tried to carry out their threats.

Ok, Toronto is cool. I?m doing interviews all day. I wanted to let you guys know some big news first! It?s springtime, the sun is out and I am going to go back to blonde. I miss it and the weather is nice and for some reason, I am going to do it!
Also, based on your feedback and input, it looks like the next video will be Danger or Stranger. We will make a definite choice this week! Because of you guys, I am still doing OK on TRL. I am planning my summer tour. It?s going to be like you have never seen before. It looks like Seattle is doing a lot of kicking and screaming for me to start there. I still want to hear from you about which city to kick it off in!

 It's approaching 10am in an unseasonably murky Los Angeles and Hilary Duff has already been up for hours. "I never, like, sleep in, no matter how late I've stayed up," she says perkily. "Sometimes I wish I could just slob out but it's not in my nature. I'm a do-er."That's something of an understatement. The measure of Duff's pro-activity over the past seven years is, to use one of her own pet adjectives, "awesome." She's starred in several TV series, appeared in movies, released million-selling albums, presided over a highly successful fashion line and started her own kids' charity. At 19, she's worth an estimated US$25 million. But if her name means nothing to you, you're probably the wrong side of 20; Duff is the original US Tween-Teen Queen. Forget Britney or Jessica Simpson or any of the other pretenders; thanks to her embodiment of the Every-Tween title character in the Disney Channel's hit series Lizzie McGuire, Duff became an icon for the new breed of adolescent girl; media-savvy and street-smart, but still subject to the same old growing pains. Such is her standing in this peer group that Elizabeth Arden, the makers of Duff's new scent With Love, have proclaimed that she "personifies the many dimensions of today's modern young women". What, I ask Duff, does she think they mean by that? "Um, wow, I've never thought about it that deeply," she said, somewhat abashed. "That's a lot to live up to. I guess they're saying that today's girls want to be independent, they want to have fun, they want to work hard and they want to be successful. We want it all," she said. "But we want it on our own terms. And in many ways, I represent all of that." She's pretty - with almond eyes and a wide-mouthed smile that can verge on the goofy - but not formidably so. What she lacks in singing ability she makes up for with her on-stage cheer-leading skills. As an actress, she's yet to give the Oscar panel any sleepless nights (though she has been nominated for a few worst- actress Razzie awards), but her charm has carried her through the teen wish-fulfilment roles, in the likes of the movie A Cinderella Story, that she's cornered the market in. Even her scent has a fresh, welcoming top-note (of `succulent mangosteen fruit'). But hang on, though - isn't that a more complex amber note unspooling at the base? Is this the first harbinger of a knottier, more adult Hilary Duff coming through? "I think it is a reflection of where I'm at, sure," she said, her naturally breezy Valley Girl mode (there isn't a trace of her native Texas in her accent) subsiding briefly into a more thoughtful tone. "As I become more mature, my tastes and interests change. Like, so many people have watched me grow up and I find it really weird when they say to me `tell us about your new look.' I'm, like, what new look? It's just me growing and getting more confident about my style." These manifestations of maturity are also coming through in Duff's music. Her new album, her fourth, modifies her fluffy pop- rock template with some harder-edged dance sounds, as exemplified on the new single With Love (also to be featured in the ad campaign for her scent - a textbook example of what marketing types call `synergy'), which has a Gwen-Stefani-in-a-rah-rah-skirt feel to it. "I've put some electro and some 80s-influenced stuff in there, and I'm also writing more. I mean, I never knew that I could write before, because when I first got my record deal, I was like, I got to sing! That was all I cared about. But now I'm older. I think it's definitely time to stretch my wings a little more." The question is, can Duff loft her audience skywards along with her? Is she concerned about leaving them behind? "I think I'm at the place now where I'm more into doing what I want. I worried about the fans for a while and I think it held me back. I mean, I do care about them, but moms would come up to me and say `oh my gosh, you're so confident, we love you, never change'." She looks incredulous. "And I would feel like saying that's great, thank you, but if someone told you at 17, 18, whatever, never change? It's a pretty heavy thing to deal with, you know? Who would want to be in their 20s or even 30s and still be behaving like a teenager?" Duff might be ready to tinker with the formula, but she - and the team behind Hilary Duff Inc, including her mother and manager, record producer Susan Duff - are too canny to make radical changes; caution is the watchword. Thus, her clothing line, stuffbyhilaryduff, which made US$5 million in its first year at the US retail chain Target, and which is represented in the UK by a trinket line at Claire's Accessories, is looking to introduce a line that's "a little more high-fashion, for older girls, with a designer-vintage-mix look, more like my own style". But Duff, a self-confessed shopaholic, said: "I can't go more than about 72 hours without shopping, but I don't think I'm excessive." She said, not entirely convincingly, that she will continue to oversee the main lines, which, she says happily, are "mass market - not forward or edgy. I create and design the line. "I'm very involved. I draw designs, bring in tear-sheets of colours and styles I like, get involved in everything from how the jeans fit to the size of the buttons. "I'm going to work really hard to stay successful and appeal to as many different people as I can, but I know there's always going to be someone younger and cooler coming after me, just like I have taken over from the one before me. And if it doesn't work, I guess I'm going to have to think harder and maybe try something else." Brave words, but it's hard to see exactly what that "something else" might be, as Duff has been in what she habitually calls "the business" virtually all her life. Her apotheosis came in 2001, when she landed the title role of Lizzie McGuire. It's Lizzie's shadow that Duff is now valiantly trying to shake off, but the `role model' aspect continues to haunt her, as seen recently when the Press has take her to task for appearing too sizezero a la Paris, Nicole or erstwhile friend Lindsay Lohan (the pair fell out years ago: "I can't even remember over what," says Duff breezily). "I did get skinny," she said. "I've felt that pressure like everyone else in my position has. When a paper comes out that says `Duff Puff - she must have gained 15 pounds,' or something like that, how would any normal person react? It's so mean, but everyone keeps buying that stuff and talking about it, so it's not going to go away." In many ways, Duff has the daunting professionalism of an industry veteran; she's adamant that "I don't want people to know everything about my life," but she confirms that she's currently single, following the break-up of her relationship with Good Charlotte singer Joel Madden last November ("I felt like we were great together, and being on my own is great too," she said, a little wistfully). In other ways, she still sounds like the teen she is; she shares her LA house with her sister, but her mother has recently moved out to a house down the street. ""It was her idea," said Duff. "She said, I want to give you guys more freedom, and I'm like, I don't want that. I want you here. So I call her every day and I still always consult her before any big decision." But whatever the growing-pain challenges ahead, Duff has the determination - and the work ethic - to meet them. "Bottom line?" she said, before heading off to her next appointment. "I love being a career woman. I love being a business woman. I love getting older and being able to express myself in all these different ways. I love, like, doing all this stuff." How close have you come to shaving off your extensions or puking on your entourage?
There are days where I don?t feel like showing up, but I don?t get all freaked out. I do get so tired and overwhelmed that I cry, and it?s a good feeling. Like, phew, you got it out and you?re ready to go again.
How do you feel about what Lindsay and Britney are going through?
I don?t really know them. I don?t want to say I feel sorry for them, because I don?t. I mean, I feel sorry that they have to deal with so many people wanting to focus on their flaws and hard times. But that?s this business. If I were put in those kind of circumstances, I don?t know how I?d handle it.

I can party, yeah. I love to go out dancing. I go to lounge restaurants like Hyde, but I don?t eat there. Have you ever heard of Hollywood Forever? It?s a cemetery, and they play old movies up on a big screen there. You bring blankets and the superserious people bring, like, fondue. It?s a really interesting crowd. I saw The Shining there.

You recently split with Good Charlotte singer Joel Madden. Are you seeing anybody now?
I?m not, and it feels good. I feel strong. Not that I didn?t feel strong when I was in a relationship. When I am in a relationship, I?m in it. I work really hard at it. I?m a pretty good girlfriend.
Do you have a type?
Not lookswise. They should be taller, which isn?t that hard, because I am five-feet-two. I like someone who can be stupid and make me laugh. I like guys that like to rock jeans and a T-shirt but still look good in a suit. I go to a lot of things and you have to dress appropriately.
How do you account for your rocking bod?
I do Pilates all the time. It totally changed my body. I was a gymnast when I was younger, and that makes you stocky. I can do a roundoff triple back handspring. It might not look as good as it used to, but I can still do it.
Do you remember your first concert?
I was 10, and my sister let me tag along. We saw No Doubt in Houston for the Tragic Kingdom tour when Gwen had braces and pink hair. I loved her. I always wanted braces. All the cool older kids had braces and would match their rubber bands to their outfits. God, that?s dorky. I can?t believe I ever thought that was cool.

I like Avenged Sevenfold, but not really death metal. There was one time when I was doing a concert, and there was a kid in a Slipknot shirt with his friends. I thought, Oh, my God, they?re totally here to beat me up, but they were singing all of my music and rocking out.

Of course I?ve had a drink. Not a Red Bull?and?vodka, though. I like to have a glass of wine with dinner, and champagne if we?re celebrating something. Don?t like hard liquor. My mom will have vodka tonic, and I tasted one once and that was the most horrible thing I have ever had. Maybe it?s something that will come later.

Hilary Duff has a $90,000 watch.The 'Cheaper By The Dozen' actress recently splashed out the enormous sum on an extravagant Jacob and Co. time piece, but admits she is embarrased about her lavish purchase.
She said: "I think my Jacob watch is the most expensive thing I have ever bought. I think it was, like, $90,000. It's really bad!
"I hate that I have that watch now. I want to get rid of it, I never wear it."
Duff - whose ex-boyfriend is Good Charlotte frontman Joel Madden - admits she has a penchant for expensive jewellery.
However, the 19-year-old actress-and-singer insists she doesn't like to flaunt her wealth like other celebrities.
She explained to TV Hits! magazine: "I spend a lot of money on jewellery, I like diamonds. I buy shoes all the time as well and they can be expensive. I love coats too.
"I have a house and two cars but I don't really buy things like that. I see people who constantly change their cars and constantly want the newest stuff, but I'm not interested."

It's been a good week. I have had some relaxation time and reflection time. I am ready to get back into the swing of things. Finally, this week I have been able to kick back and rest! I have had some down time. I am still a bit nervous about how my album will do. But, at the same time I am happy with the outcome of it because I say everything that I wanted to say in each song. All of the songs are close to me and they mean something special. If you haven't already, pick up a copy of Dignity.Oh yeah, thanx 4 checking out the IN the Life of special on MTV. It will still rerun for the next 2 weeks, I had fun with MTV as they followed us around all over the Country!
Oh well, its "bye" for now, I am going to go hop in the pool and kick back and relax. I will be in Toronto in a few weeks.

| Pop singer/actress Hilary Duff was so impressed with the results of her 'dessert or bread' diet, she went crazy and accepts she lost too much weight. The "So Yesterday" singer stunned fans late last year when she appeared at a series of parties and launches looking waif-like and skinny. The backlash made Duff take a long hard look at herself in the mirror--and she didn't like what she saw. She says, "I made a conscious choice to get in shape. I've always been a junk food eater, but I started paying more attention to what I put in my body and cut out foods like pizza, chicken fingers and French fries. "If I knew I'd want dessert one night, I wouldn't have bread that day. If I wanted to eat bread, I wouldn't have dessert. "Seeing how well it worked motivated me to keep going, but I hit a period when I got too skinny. A lot of full-grown men would come up to me that loved Lizzie McGuire, but it wasn?t up until this year that I found out that they really liked my music and that my music was playing in some gay clubs. Once I was at Barney?s and there was this hardcore kid about 22 or 23. He looked pretty intense with the tight black pants, creepers and tattoos, and when he came up to me I was like, Oh my God, I?m about to get beat up. But he was like, ?I?m gay and I?m obsessed with you and I want to see your concert, so you better hurry up and go on tour! When can I buy ?Play With Fire?? I love you so much!? I was just so flattered.Sounds like we?re just like your tween girl fans.
[Laughs]But more fun and more wild and crazy!Dignity has invited comparisons to Kylie Minogue. Did she inspire you?
Some of the tracks definitely sound Kylie-ish, but I tried not to listen to any other music when I was making my record because I just wanted it to be mine. But it?s so flattering when people tell me that or when I?ve read articles that compare me to Kylie. That?s huge. I love Kylie?s music and think she?s incredible.So many songs on Dignity deal with imperfect relationships and breakups. How much of the album was inspired by your two-and-a-half relationship with Joel Madden?
A lot of it, definitely. That was the one big relationship that I had been in. Making the record half of the time being with him and then while going through the breakup, I got to cover a lot of emotions. Obviously people like to talk more about the negative, but there are songs about how great our relationship was, too.Are there any songs that you?re nervous for Joel to hear?
No. We?re very cool with one another. I just saw him when I hosted TRL for a week and he was like, ?Congratulations on the record, I can?t wait for it to come out!? I?m not embarrassed by anything I wrote. The only thing that sucks is that there?s been stuff said about songs on my record being about Nicole Richie because he?s dating her now. It?s absolutely not true. When you break up with someone you expect them to be with someone else. She?s never done anything to me and I?ve never done anything to her. I don?t know her and I have no reason to write a song about her on my record.But the track ?Dignity,? which criticizes paparazzi princesses, certainly isn?t going to help fix any feuds!
I don?t think so either, but this record was about being open and being myself. The song ?Dignity??that?s how I feel. It?s blunt, it?s honest and I think a lot of people agree with it no matter how much they might love to talk about those people. It interests me, too. I see them in magazines and I?m like, ?Oh, what?s so-and-so doing now?? But it?s kind of ridiculous and I don?t care if people know that I say that because it?s the truth. She is definitely in that group, but I?m not specifically talking about her.Gossip bloggers such as Perez Hilton suggest that you?ve been out partying harder since your breakup. Should we be concerned?
Oh my gosh, I?ve been going out for a long time. Just now because other people are going into rehab they start to notice that I?m going out. I like to go out and have fun with my girlfriends, but I don?t like to make a big deal out of it. I don?t like to go in the front door and I don?t like to walk out stumbling and crazy. When you do that kind of thing you know what kind of attention you?re going to get. But I don?t think there?s any cause for concern.How are you like your new fragrance, With Love?
The scent is very diverse. It?s sweet but also woodsy and dark, and that?s a different part of my personality that people don?t always see. The top note is the sweetest, but then the dry down, the one that you?re left with the longest, is warmer and more exotic.When are you coming to perform on Broadway like your sister Haylie did in Hairspray?
I would love to, but I don?t know if I could do that. It?s so hard. They actually asked me to play Sandy in Grease. Every single day and sometimes twice a day? That?s insane. I?m so proud of her that she did that. Hopefully, it?ll be something that I?ll get to experience in my career. I would love to come live in New York.Who?s your American Idol pick?
I don?t really watch American Idol! But for some reason I know about somebody named Sanjaya and his fantastic hair or his crazy, ridiculous hair. People can?t figure it out, right, whether it?s ridiculous or good?

For a while i did. There’s a certain feeling you go through when you’re my age and everyone knows who you are and they’ve watched you grow up.You feel scared to do something different, but you get to a point where you’re like "Well, I’ve got to do things that make me happy. I have to challenge myself ". I’m not that kind of person to go off and act crazy like some people. I know who I’m, I know what I’m capable of, and I’m going to work hard to get what i want. I think it looks stupid when people turn 19 and then do everything they can do to rebel against who they’ve been.It looks like your not mature at all.

Getting there was half the fun. We chose to take the southeast ridge route from Nepal. It took about eight days by yak to get to base camp and then another four days of climbing! No one complained a bit with the exception of my drummer when he realized that he had to carry his own kit. Oh, and one of the yaks really needed to do something about his breath. All in all it was a really cool (literally) adventure!

OMG I am sooo nervous, my album dropped and I am anxiously waiting to see how it does. I want it to do well. I have been working hard and I have a new band and a new sound. Our album release party was huge! We had over 400 people in the house. Rhett Lawrence stopped by, he helped me on Play With Fire, and Cara D. helped me write most of the album. Richard Vision who does a lot of my remixes was our D.J. It was awesome. I am humbled and excited about all of the reviews in the NY Times and USA Today (knock on Wood). No matter how the album sells, I am proud of it because it came from my heart!I am feeling better since I returned from NY, maybe because I had a chance to shop a little in NY. Well, this week I have Kimmel, Tyra, Ellen, Leno and something for My Space. Oh yeah, check out the MTV Special on my life. MTV followed me around the world; it was fun. Don't 4get to pick up a copy of Dignity at the stores and to vote for my video on TRL. Seriously, guys, I am so thankful to all of you who send inspiring and positive remarks to me. I love how active people are like Sarah and William and Scot. You guys are a great source of inspiration to me! I thank you for all of the support.

| Lindsay Lohan and Hilary Duff have patched up their differences five years after they fought over the affections of Aaron Carter. The two actress/pop stars launched a public war of words in 2002 when they simultaneously dated Carter, but time seems to have healed their rift. The former love rivals have been spotted hanging out together in Hollywood recently, and now Duff has told People magazine she's no longer warring with Lohan. She says, "We are both adults and whatever happened, happened when we were young. It's over." Lohan further proved the fight between her and Duff is over when she showed up at the release party for Duff's new album, Dignity, on Monday night. She told reporters, "She's really fun... When asked if she had other problems besides McDonalds, Hilary said that "since Britney got out of her famous panty free limo, everyone tries aiming their cameras at my crotch every time I sit down. There's this one photographer named Filbert who won't leave me alone! He is always mumbling something about stars and points and doing a whole series on me if I'll just show him the honey pot."
"I guess I'm also in the middle on this weight thing. Britney's now fat and bald and Paris and Nicole are way too skinny, so people are pulling me both ways. There is one good thing, at least I don't look like Rosie O'Donnell!"

But look at her now! Suddenly, she?s wanton, self-destructive, vengeful, and irate, lashing out at stalkers (?Dreamer?), sleazy older dudes (?Danger?), and creepily persistent suitors (?Between You and Me?). First, Hilary Duff talks about ?Stranger? and ?Gypsy Woman? and how they relate to her parents - NOT to Joel Madden & Nicole Richie:
Duff insists that both songs ?Stranger and Gypsy Woman? were inspired by a crisis having nothing to do with her former beau.
?This is so hard to talk about,? Duff says, holed up in a tiny dressing room at MTV?s studios, where she co-hosted TRL last week. She?s referring to the separation last year of her parents, Bob and Susan Duff, which the family managed to keep more private than the Duff/Madden breakup. ?For some reason, I was embarrassed that my family wasn?t perfect and that some woman had broken it up.?

Teen starlet Hilary Duff claims she's never had a problem with her weight, but feels pressure to be thin.The 19-year-old actress and singer told People Magazine that she's either perceived as too fat or too thin in the media, which she says can be "judgmental and mean."
"And if you don't like the way you look or feel insecure, when people say things about you _ in magazines or just in everyday life _ they can be hurtful. ... But you'll never make them happy," she told the magazine.
Duff, who has sold more than 13 million albums worldwide, has a new album out April 3 called "Dignity." Several of the songs are about her relationship with her now ex-boyfriend, Good Charlotte singer Joel Madden, but she denies that she slammed his new newest flame, Nicole Richie, in her tune "Gypsy Woman."
And anyway, she told People she doesn't like to discuss relationships.
"It's not my job to talk about my relationship," she said. " ... But the more you try to keep it quiet, the more people want to know about it."
